Vaccines are estimated to have saved around 154 million lives worldwide in the last 50 years, making them one of the most effective ways to protect people from serious diseases.
This year’s World Immunisation Week theme is “For every generation, vaccines work.”
At Public Health South Tees, we support families in Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland at every stage of their child’s vaccination journey – from a baby’s first immunisations to important teenage boosters.
Vaccines protect against serious but preventable diseases such as meningitis, whooping cough, measles, HPV and diphtheria, tetanus and polio, helping children and young people stay safe and healthy.
What have Public Health South Tees been up to recently?
Did you know that Public Health South Tees, along with local partners and councils, have created a series of short, child‑friendly videos about the vaccinations offered in secondary school?
The videos explain:
- what immunisations are: Immunisations: What are they?
- what each vaccine protects against
- what to expect on a school vaccination clinic day, helping ease any worries young people may have: Getting Your Vaccine
You can find these videos on the ADPH NE website: Health Protection | North East
Public Health South Tees also have a brand-new website with lots of useful information to help families in Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland learn more about vaccines: Immunisations in Middlesbrough and Redcar | Get Protected — Public Health South Tees
Childhood vaccinations (8 weeks to 3 years 4 months)
Children are invited to six important vaccination appointments during their early years. These appointments help build strong protection while their immune system is still developing.
Teenage vaccinations (usually school Years 8 and 9 – ages 12 to 14)
Young people are offered vaccines to protect against HPV, meningitis and diphtheria, tetanus and polio. These are usually given in school. If a vaccine is missed, a catch-up appointment can be arranged through your GP.
Public Health South Tees is here to help every step of the way.
