Middlesbrough Council is partnering with White Ribbon UK to help prevent violence against women and girls (VAWG), including harassment, abuse and violence. Through a three-year action plan, the council aims to create lasting cultural change across its workforce, services and communities.
The campaign message is clear: “If nobody challenges it, nothing changes.”
White Ribbon UK encourages everyone to challenge harmful attitudes, behaviours and beliefs by speaking up about sexist language, harassment and disrespect, and promoting healthy relationships, equality and respect.
Schools have an important role to play. By creating safe, inclusive environments, challenging stereotypes and helping children and young people understand respect, consent and positive relationships, schools can help build a culture where everyone feels valued and safe.
Middlesbrough Council is encouraging staff and community members to make the White Ribbon Promise: “I promise to… never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women.” The council also welcomes ambassadors and champions to help spread the message and support its accreditation efforts.
As part of our work with schools, HeadStart encourages colleagues to help children and young people develop the attitudes, confidence and understanding needed to build respectful relationships and challenge harmful behaviours. we would also like to encourage HeadStart schools to share this message with their staff, pupils, families and wider school communities, helping to raise awareness and promote positive conversations about respect, equality and healthy relationships.
Together, we can make a difference. It takes all of us.
