It’s the second half of the Summer term, it’s exam season, it can feel like those to do lists are endless – it can feel like an absolute sprint to the end of the academic year!
In case our frequent reminders have escaped you, the HeadStart team are here to remind you that YOU need to be on the to do list too! 😊
Yes, your duties and performance at work are important, there are actions that need tending to and you can do those to the best of your ability whilst also moving towards the Summer holidays with some wellbeing in tact!
Some handy tips to guide you:
Maintain healthy work/life boundaries
Switch off emails – turn off notifications outside of working hours and agree not to check your inbox at weekends. Establish a digital detox period that works for you.
‘Worry time’
Dedicate 10-15 minutes late afternoon to acknowledge and write down any concerns. Once the time is up close the notebook and mentally clock out.
80/20 rule
Focus on the 20% of planning and actions that produce 80% of student progress, you don’t need to over engineer every single lesson.
Student led learning
Empower your students by incorporating peer discussions, group projects and active participation. This can help to reduce the cognitive load on you and give natural pauses from whole class instruction.
Prioritise daily rest and self-care
What are your non-negotiables? Pick 1-2 activities that keep you balanced; a 20-minute walk, reading a book, a cuppa in the garden – protect this time fiercely.
Rest is more than just getting good sleep. Try and gift yourself sensory rest by stepping away from screens and noise and practice emotional rest by debriefing with trusted colleagues or friends.
Micro-mindfulness
Take a few deep breaths before students enter the classroom or while you make a cup of tea. Regulated teachers = more regulated students.
Your wellbeing is essential in sustaining an education career and contributing to a positive and productive whole school culture. The tips above can support you in having intentional daily practices to help you feel good and perform well.
