Please see the below from Fresh and Balance, regarding Poverty Proofing Stop Smoking Support.
Dear North East Stop Smoking Community of Interest,
As we strive to reduce health inequalities across our region, understanding the intersection between financial hardship and tobacco dependency is more critical than ever.
On behalf of the North East Stop Smoking Community of Interest, we are delighted to invite you to a 1-hour introductory session on Poverty Proofing Stop Smoking Support, delivered by the experts at Children North East.
Why Attend This Session?
Tobacco use remains a leading driver of health inequalities. This session is designed to build awareness of how poverty can create hidden barriers, affecting a person’s ability to both access and benefit from cessation support.
By attending, you will explore practical ways to reduce financial and socio-emotional barriers, ensuring our services are as inclusive, accessible, and supportive as possible for every member of our community.
Who is it for?
This session is highly relevant for anyone involved in delivering stop smoking interventions in the community and NHS tobacco dependency treatment pathways, including those who:
- Deliver stop smoking support.
- Manage Community Stop Smoking Services or NHS Tobacco Dependency Treatment Services.
- Commission services.

About the Facilitators
Children North East are pioneers in the “Poverty Proofing” initiative. Their evidence-based approach has been instrumental in identifying unintended barriers to engagement across the North East North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (NENC ICB) and wider. Their work helps organizations look through the lens of those experiencing poverty to ensure that service delivery is dignified, accessible, and free from the “hidden costs” – both financial and emotional – that often prevent long-term success in quitting smoking. Understanding the unintended barriers to engagement, allowing us to tailor our interventions to better serve low-income households and vulnerable populations.
We look forward to seeing a strong representation from across the North East as we work together to make our services more equitable.
