We’re into the fast-paced rhythm of the Autumn term and outside in the school grounds we can witness a spectacular display of nature as the leaves turn crisp and golden and fall from the trees. This cycle of nature can carry meaning for school staff as we notice that the trees release their leaves gently trusting that this shedding is necessary for survival, rest and future growth.
In education, we can sometimes struggle to drop our ‘leaves’, we hold on tightly to overwhelming workloads, perfectionism, minor classroom setbacks and the emotional weight of the pupils we support.
To protect our own wellbeing during this season we can look to the Boingboing Resilience Framework, an evidence-based tool that reminds us resilience is about ‘bouncing forwards’ through practical moves. Nature’s Autumn routine aligns perfectly with two core pillars of the framework:
- Coping (Calming Down & Self-Soothing): The trees teach us that letting go is an act of preservation, not failure. When we let go of things outside our control—like unmanageable to-do lists or past mistakes—we give our central nervous systems permission to calm down and self-sooth.
- Core Self (Acceptance): One of the foundational “Noble Truths” of the Boingboing framework is Acceptance. October asks us to accept our human limitations. We must acknowledge our current stress baselines and focus on what needs to happen to sustain ourselves, rather than burning out by trying to do it all.
| Visual lessons for Autumn | Your Resilient Move |
| Shedding leaves | Practice the coping skill of saying “no” or letting a non-essential wait. |
| Drawing energy to the roots | Protect your basics – prioritise a healthy lunch, a walk in the fresh air and proper sleep. |
| Slowing down growth | Embrace acceptance – give yourself permission to operate at a sustainable pace rather than peak-energy mode. |
The HeadStart team invite you to take a few minutes to reflect before you leave the building today – look out at the trees and consider one ‘leaf’ you can safely drop this evening to clear space for your own wellbeing. Let’s learn from October’s lesson to lighten our loads, protect our roots and remember that rest is a vital part of renewal.
