Over the last academic year, the HeadStart Team have had the privilege to work with a group of year 5 pupils who were keen to become mental health champions in their school, HeadStarters.
They started their journey by applying for the role and showing an interest in mental health, then took part in the 12 sessions to complete their Bronze and Silver Award learning. Then, these incredible children, delivered a whole school assembly talking about mental health and how to manage your emotions.
As if this was not enough. They attend a HeadStart event in March where they met the Redcar and Cleveland Mayor. They went prepared with questions about mental health and thins that affect people’s health e.g. poverty. These HeadStarters made an excellent impression on the Mayor and his colleagues.
They invited the Redcar and Cleveland Mayor into school to share their HeadStarter journey. They spoke with passion and purpose, leading a conversation that raised aspirations and showed just how powerful young people’s voices could be.
These young people have grown in confidence, supported one another, and stepped out of their comfort zones, more than once. Well done Ings Farm Primary HeadStarters, we are all watching for what happens next!
