See further information below regarding Dementia Action Week
Dementia Action Week is an annual Campaign led nationally by the Alzheimer’s Society. The campaign focuses on:-
- Raising awareness of dementia
- Challenging stigma and misconceptions
- Encouraging individuals, organisations, and communities to take practical action to support people affected by dementia
Communities and Organisations in Middlesbrough are coming together to support Dementia Action Week by raising awareness, encouraging understanding, and promoting simple, practical actions that help people affected by dementia to live well in our community.
Key Themes and Messages
- Raise Awareness & Reduce Stigma: Understand that dementia affects more than just memory (including communication and motor skills).
- Encourage Early Diagnosis: Urge individuals worried about memory problems to see a GP early, as finding out allows for access to support.
- Act on Prevention: Experts agree that what is good for the heart is good for the brain; a healthy diet, regular exercise, limiting alcohol, stopping smoking, and blood pressure control can reduce risk.
- Support Carers and Patients: Highlight the vital role of unpaid carers and encourage the creation of dementia-friendly communities.
- Take Practical Actions including:
- Fill in the Herbert Protocol: A vital tool for tracking down loved ones who may go missing.
- Be Patient: Support those struggling in public, such as at cash points or in shops.
- Celebrate Community: by fostering supportive communities that offer a sense of belonging and safety to people living with dementia and their families
Our Commissioned Provider Dementia Action Teesside have uploaded the Middlesbrough Timetable on their website as well as what’s happening in other LA areas. They have also created some brilliant resources. Please take a look.
