Meningitis awareness
Cases of invasive meningococcal disease have been confirmed in Kent which may be a cause for concern for some. It is always important to know the signs of symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia.
Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord (meninges).
It can affect anyone, but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults. Meningitis can be very serious if not treated quickly. It can cause life-threatening sepsis and result in permanent damage to the brain or nerves.
A number of vaccinations are available that offer some protection against meningitis.
Get specific information for teenagers and young people or for babies and young children on the Healthier Together website.

Opportunity to help develop programme to tackle attendance issues for pupils with SEN(D)
Based on prior research regarding school attendance problems, a PhD student researcher from Northumbria University is currently working on developing an intervention focusing on partnerships between home and school. The programme aims to improve the relationship between home and school, when trying to understand the issues for pupils with Special Educational Needs (and Disabilities) in mainstream secondary schools, and importantly how to empower all voices in the partnership so that they can contribute to solutions meaningfully.
You, your colleagues and families you work with might be interested in being involved in developing the intervention to make sure it is engaging and viable.
The programme being developed is to build knowledge and skills among pupils, caregivers and school staff to be effective in shared learning and shared problem-solving when it comes to issues which make attendance difficult for pupils with SEN(D). It aims to give everyone involved the tools to work together and feel empowered to make change within their school community; and advocate together for change that needs to be done outside of it.
The researcher is working with the people that the programme is aimed at, to make sure that the programme is designed in a way which is engaging and meaningful to those that will use it, and that resource is available for those that will deliver it. They are currently looking to speak to those who may be interested in being involved in the development of the intervention.
If you have any colleagues, schools, families, or pupils who would be interested in being involved to shape the programme, please get in touch to find out more information about the project.
Please use this form to register your interest and to be sent further details about being involved. Feel free to forward this information to anyone you think might be interested in taking part.
Contact the researcher Andrea Carrick andrea.carrick@northumbria.ac.uk directly if you have any questions.
