This is your fortnightly reminder to add a little self-care to your day. You are worth it!
This week our focus is on the power of the breath and how it can support us to feel relaxed and calm.
The school day is busy, modern life is busy and many of us are swept along in our daily tasks and demands without really thinking about how we are breathing.
Deep breathing can help to regulate our nervous systems and this supports our physical and mental wellbeing as well as helping to reduce anxiety and stress. When we are dashing about all day it is common for our breathing to be shorter and shallower, known as chest breathing. Deep breathing involves taking slow, full breaths that engage the diaphragm, known as abdominal breathing. It is this deep breathing that promotes relaxation and can relieve stress.
If our own nervous system is calm and regulated, we can use this to co-regulate with the young people we work with when they are distressed. This can provide emotional safety and security.
So we invite you to take a breather today, long, slow deep breaths. Follow this calming breath activity for a short but powerful bit of self-care in your day: take a deep breath
