Transitioning from primary to secondary school can be a daunting experience for many Year 7 pupils. The leap involves adjusting to a new environment, meeting new peers and handling increased academic expectations.
Recognising these challenges, HeadStart implemented several supportive sessions to ease this transition.
These sessions focused on adapting to change and managing worries. Allowing the pupils to explore and manage their emotions, express their concerns, share their experiences and learn practical strategies to cope.
These sessions followed the work the HeadStart team delivered during the summer holidays with the activity club.
The summer activity club was designed to provide a fun and engaging space where students could begin to adapt to the secondary school setting. Activities included team-building exercises, creative workshops and sports, all aimed at creating a sense of belonging among the Year 7 pupils. The relationships developed during the activity club were a good foundation for the support sessions delivered in schools this September.
The HeadStart Team is dedicated to continuously evolving their service to better support young people and focusing on both the emotional and social aspects of their lives. This helps pupils develop resilience and confidence, ensuring every student feels valued and supported.
